The armscyes on the rain cloud dress are piped. Maybe sleeves tomorrow? I might know what I want them to look like?

My phone tells me that I climbed 51 flights of stairs today.

But on the plus side, everything I don't plan on tossing from Old Place is now in New Place, and I drove a large van in freaking Brooklyn and didn't damage anything (a true first for me driving rented vehicles in a city!).

My nephew is worth his weight in gold, and I am so glad we get to reconnect like we are.

A good day.

I forgot to post yesterday. WHOOPS. I was off yesterday but had a hard time getting started. I did eventually get some traction....

drumroll please )Yes yes I will put it over a shorter hoop. I ordered this exact one again and I'm going to just move the bottom one UP to the final length but I'm not positive what that will be. So I'm doing it over the long one at the moment.
I did not manage to get the waistband on...but I put in a real placket (that never happens). And tonight I got the grommets set for the corset (remember that one...) and pinned on the waistband...currently I don't want to go upstairs and sew it on.

Aunt flo came today. so I feel disgusting.

oops! But I've been sewing! Not as much as I should be, with Gettysburg now officially less than a month away. Shh, don't remind me.

Instead I've made two new 18th century outfits, one of which the weather has been decidedly uncooperative about me wearing. 80°+ weather and a wool gown do not go together. Maybe if I do some December stuff it'll get an outing. I also made a shortgown/bedgown, which [personal profile] mandie_rw and [personal profile] robinsnest have both posted pictures of, from our bedgown revolt last weekend.

Gettysburg sewing (and knitting and crocheting) is still progressing. I'm not worried yet that I won't finish my sewing. I'm not sure other things will be finished in time, though. I've got an in progress shawl, but it's the bottom of the list. The tunisian crochet under petti I'm working on is taking precedence over that. We'll see!

The rain cloud skirt is on the waistband, the hem facing is done, and it looks good over the tied up hoop without a petticoat.

I'm inching towards being ready...

I was going to wait until I had time to go into Seventeen and get the textual backup for everything I'm saying, but I have gradually come to realize that if I wait until then it will never happen until possibly after Yuletide which isn't acceptable. Also I guess it would be even longer than it actually is. So. Here you go.

This is long even without quotations. )

Eating:I made Thai inspired yellow curry the other night with tofu, cauliflower and sweet potatoes. It wasn't bad. The people in my household I was feeding liked it.

Reading: I started So You Want to be a Robot and Other Stories by A. Merc Rustad because many people whose taste I trust liked it. Currently only two stories in but I like it so far.

Making: I'm sewing a dress for me! I don't sew a lot for myself or for adults so this exciting.

I've only watched two episodes of the show so far, but the guy playing Richard Garland in The Halcyon is very close to my mental model of Illyan. He's got the self-effacing slightly puppyish face, he's got the whole spymaster cunning and fighting dirty thing going too, he's a loyal but independent-minded subordinate and generally he's not far off my mental image of him, both in the actor and the character. Tempting to reshape Lady Hamilton as Alys now and see if I can ship them, but Alys even right after Padma died wasn't quite as crazy as Lady Hamilton, though Lady Hamilton does have good reason.

Anyway, it's a good show so far. It's about the fortunes of a grand hotel in London just before the Blitz begins, a bit Upstairs Downstairs/Downton Abbey kind of vibe, but in the 40s. And googling it now to find out the name of the actor (Steven Mackintosh) I discover that it's been cancelled after one season, because this always happens with new series I like the look of. Oh well.

Garter Progress

I've been knitting away on my garters, and I'm three hundred rows into the first one. Only seven hundred left...and then another thousand in the second one. Anyway, here's a progress picture from Monday night. I've knit another motif since then.

17th Century Knit Garters Progress - 10/16/17

I didn't try to get the whole thing in the picture because the end just repeats the same 43 rows almost five times.

The width evens out nicely when it's slightly stretched. I think I'll be able to steam them into shape, and they'll be stretched when worn anyway.

My Avengers/Trek fusion Straight on till Morning is now being translated into Chinese, as 冲破黎明 Straight on till Morning, by AkiJune.

I am impressed, not just because they are translating a 100,000-word story (though, I mean, that is impressive), but that they are doing so with footnotes! Footnotes for all the minor characters and the technobabble (including the stuff I made up) and the random obscure comics references!

PokeGo is once again hosting an in-game Halloween event. The rewards are the same as last year's:
  • doubled candy when catching, hatching & transferring pokemon

  • your buddy will earn candy twice as fast

Other highlights: Pikachu will have a special hat. Your avatar can wear Mimikyu's disguise hat. And in addition to the already existing ghost pokemon, we will see some ghost types from Gen 3.

another 12 hour day

Today was my second 12 hour day this week. But I keep telling myself I have to sew every day after work...it is less than a month and all. So today I sewed the second half of all the first french seams (up to 52 seams sewn).

Saveall pressed open. Then I sewed the pairs into couplets for the first half of that french seam...13 more seams. (65 done. 39 to go)
Then I couldn't handle the thought of more seams so I switched gears and made a replacement for the lacing panel I put too big of holes in now that I ordered smaller grommets. They came yesterday so I should get those put in and finish the corset.

Thank you for everyone's sympathy about the car. $400 later...

As usual...

I'm here! I'm intact! I'm in my new place! I'm about 90% moved in, but, lololol, the things that are still at the old place are, for some reason, things like all my regular clothes and my blankets and sheets. Betta Barnes will probably come with me tomorrow, and a friend with access to a creepy van (for setting up races) maaaaaay be able to help me collect everything that's left (mostly kitchen and random stuff). Five amazing Russian men completely disassembled my apartment in 90 minutes yesterday, four flights of stairs and all, and the whole move was done in just over three hours. As I was standing on the sidewalk with my bike, talking to the guys about how to get to the new place, who but Terrible Neighbor comes sauntering by, with her two kids right there. "Bye, bitch," she says, like she's ~got me (or something???). I thought up all this clever shit I could have said later, but... no more. It's almost over.

So now I'm picking out paint colors and trying to find where I packed things like my remote controls. I am determined to have at least one small corner plastered with flamingo wallpaper. An awesome Puerto Rican guy from the Bronx set up my internet tonight; we traded pet photos and stories, and he told me all about his brother, a retired Marine, who lives on the island with a service pig named Cleopatra. (He also told me that he thought I was an autoresponse robot when I picked up his call, because my voice was so "creamy," which is a freaking delightful compliment.)

I kind of don't have much more to say at the moment. Therapy was good today. Things are just... looking up, and that's great. ♥

Research Risks

I have some thoughts:

1. Marine biology is low risk of misuse by supervillains? Come on! Sharks!

2. Molasses storage's low risk of breaking free and threatening local population: didn't that actually happen at least once? If we're counting trucks as facilities, I mean. Never mind, I should have looked at the mouseover text before posting.

3. I wouldn't put linguistics that low for supervillain risk, assuming the validity of the strong Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. (Yes, everything I knew about Sapir-Whorf did come from that one Delany book.)

4. But then, he put palaeontology low as well, and. Well. Do that right/wrong enough and you get both microbiology (bubonic plague! anthrax!) AND ornithology (dinosaurs!)

5. HE LEFT OUT ECONOMICS. And poli-sci (between history and sociology?) but imo economics is WAY scarier from both a supervillain and accidental escape perspective.

6. Really, isn't any discipline high supervillain risk if the supervillain has the right mental attitude?

7. If prosthetics is high supervillain risk/low escape risk, and dentistry is low supervillain risk/low escape risk, are dentures high or low supervillain risk?
